Sierra On-Line's Laura Bow Mysteries. This is a fan page for Sierra's Laura Bow Mysteries created by the legendary Roberta Williams. With The Colonel's Bequest, Roberta Williams showed (again) that she was a master game designer, writing one of the very few good detective games in this mold. As a matter of fact, the only two others I can think of are The Last Express and Gabriel Knight 3. So if you liked either of those, you just have to play The Colonel's Bequest. THE BATTLE OF LITTLE BIG HORN-June 25 -26, 1876 google-site-verification: google9840a442cf327899.html. What do you know about Stonewall's Main Event and also Commander's Princess ( a Wing Commander daughter)? I've found a little bit by Googling, but it's hard to find specifics. The Colonel's Bequest (aka Laura Bow I: The Colonel's Bequest or The Colonel's Bequest: a Laura Bow Mystery) is a computer game published by Sierra On-Line in 1989. This graphic adventure game was the first of the short-lived 'Laura Bow Mystery' series created by Roberta Williams and used many elements from the original Mystery House. It was created with SCI0. It uses 4-bit color (16 colors.

Audio problems are common in the later Sierra DOS SCI games. There's no single fix for all these games.
Problem - Poor Quality / No Sound (Win9x and XP):
The game has no sound or the music is of poor quality.

Solution 4 (DOS/Win9x):
Install DOS drivers for your soundcard. Without DOS drivers installed you won't have sound in a DOS window in Windows 9x. If you can't find DOS drivers for your soundcard, there is an alpha (developmental) version of VDMS that you can try.

This page details one or more prototype versions of The Colonel's Bequest.
This article is a work in progress. ..Well, all the articles here are, in a way. But this one moreso, and the article may contain incomplete information and editor's notes. |
A rolling demo of the game's intro was released prior to the game's completion. It's rather rare to come across.

The changes to all characters are as follows:
- Clarence (far left) - Standing straight and appearing slightly hunched over. There are less dark colors in his suit.
- Gloria (second from left) - Dress is slightly altered and her feathered boa is made longer and purple.
- Gertrude (third from left) - Face appears older.
- Rudy (fourth from left) - Poses on-stage.
- Celie (to the left of the Colonel) - Arms are raised and her left foot sticks out slightly.
- Colonel Henri (in wheelchair and dead-center) - No changes.
- Fifi (to the right of the Colonel) - Standing straight and her apron appears different.
- Jeeves (fourth from right) - Standing straight.
- Lilia (third from right) - Bangs appear under her hairband, and her entire body is angled to her left.
- Ethel (second from right) - Standing straight.
- Wilbur (far right) - Standing straight. His hair and facial details are much greater, better showing his age. His suit appears a lot lighter.
Backgrounds
All notes are made comparing the final version to the prototype used in the demo.

The dock was slightly widened, highlights were added, and several crates were added.
Final |
---|
The light shining in the kitchen was removed, the mirror details were darkened, the background in the windows was lightened, and the mirror and window streaks were flipped.
Final |
---|
The font used for 'Will' was changed, along with using lowercase letters.
Final |
---|
A knocker was added to the left door.
Sprites
All notes are made comparing the final version to the prototype used in the demo.
Final |
---|
Laura's walking sprites underwent a lot of changes between the demo and final:
- The dress was made wider in most of the frames.
- Shading and depth was added to Laura's dress and figure.
- Her hairstyle was changed.
- Her hands were raised to be parallel to the ground.
- Her front and rear views are 1 pixel shorter.
- A marker (by the feet) was removed.
On a semi-related note: in the final game, most of the sprites used to depict Laura use the body that appears in the demo version. For most of her action frames, they only updated her head.
Final |
---|
Laura's portrait was redrawn completely: she looks significantly younger, her dress was given more details, and she also has a necklace.
Final |
---|
Laura's sitting pose was redrawn quite a bit for the final, along with altering her pose to be cross-legged. Her book also changed colors from blue to purple. The perspective of the bench was also altered.
Of note, the bench has part of Laura attached to it in the final version for reference purposes.

Laura and Lilian have more colorful suitcases in the demo.
